What is llms.txt

A Markdown file for AI tools that briefly explains what your site does and where to find the important information.

We strongly recommend keeping this check green in Articlero. Without the right setup, Articlero may not deliver the results you expect from your content.

In short

llms.txt is a cheat sheet for AI. Instead of ChatGPT, Perplexity, or another AI tool piecing together an image from random parts of your site, it gets a clean and concise overview: who you are, what you offer, and which pages matter.

Why it matters for Articlero

Articlero creates content meant to help you grow in the age of AI search too. If AI tools lack clear context about your site, they may misunderstand your content, cite weaker pages, or not mention you in answers at all. llms.txt is not a guarantee of results, but we strongly recommend having it.

What should be right

  • The file exists at /llms.txt.
  • It is readable as text or Markdown, not as an HTML page.
  • It briefly describes the company, product, audience, and main topics.
  • It links to important pages, articles, documentation, or categories.

How to set it up

  1. 1Create an llms.txt file in the root of your site.
  2. 2Write a short summary of the site in plain language.
  3. 3Add links to the most important pages and articles.
  4. 4Keep the file up to date, especially after changing your offering or site structure.
  5. 5In Articlero, run the check in the project audit.

Common mistakes

  • The file is empty or contains only generic marketing.
  • The site returns an HTML template instead of Markdown.
  • Links to the truly important pages are missing.
  • The content does not say who you are and who the product is for.

What Articlero checks

The audit checks whether /llms.txt exists and whether it does not look like a regular HTML page.
